Rave On

Recently we got our savage on at a warehouse party with the Wild North crew and it was very legit…

Take an abandoned warehouse ...

Toss some graffiti on the walls...

Add some glow sticks...

And you got yourself a RAVE… right on

In fact, these guys throw one of these little soiress every couple of months, so if you live in the DC area, you should check out their next gig,

In honor of my recent trip to Chicago, I thought I highlight some of the great sounds I’ve heard coming out of there.  The windy city has got some talent.

Hooray! Trippy chillwave that will put you in a trance.

Because anthems aren’t just for New York and LA… plus this music video is pretty entertaining…

Vacations
Vacations music makes you want to do just that… take a vacation

I’m not gonna lie, this music makes me feel weird, in an endearing/creepy way.   Maybe it’s because I can’t tell if Aleks is singing in English or some Viking tongue or because of the interesting choice in song titles like “I want to melt his eyes.”

More to come on what I’ve been listening to lately and possibly some high lights  from other upcoming trips… anyone know any good chillwave bands from Italy?

There is so many bomb-ass jams out there right now, here’s what we’ve been digging lately.

Dakotafish sent us an E-mail about a month back with their two latest singles available free for download at their bandcamp site. What a great addition to our September playlist, sorry we couldn’t pass these along to y’all sooner. It’s a little something to get you amped for those crisp fall nights to come. We can’t wait to hear the rest of the album.

Remember Shabazz Palaces?
Well they’ve signed with Sub Pop and have a full length album on the way. But if your cravin’ more now, check out this sampler of some of their stuff.

This preview for Dustin Wong’s Infinite Love is like lots and lots of badass paintings on a reel with background music. The album, which comes out in October, includes a full length music video also created by the artist. Based on the preview video below, its lookin pretty trippy.

I was gone for a minute...

We’ve been on a little summer break, hence the lack of updates. Stay tuned for some more recent posts soon. In the meantime, here’s what we’ve been up to since our last post:

Sleigh Bells and Die Antwoord rocked our faces at Hardfest NYC back in July while M.I.A. left us slightly disappointed.

MGMT played a subpar show at Merriweather Post Pavilion… and then made this weird video to go with the title track of their new album:

Our friends the FUTUREBIRDS released their debut full length album, Hampton’s Lullaby, and if you don’t own it yet, you should. Perfect for those late Indian summer afternoons.
Here they are performing one of the new jams, video by Duke Street.

Wise Blood has got a knack for mixing all over the place generes into some feel good music. It’s light, it’s happy and it is the perfect summer blend. His EP, titled “+” is available for free download on his Bandcamp. Below is a song off his next EP which isn’t coming out until August, enjoy!

Jacksonville’s Unouomedude (pronounced: you know you owe me dude) has released his EP, Marsh, which he's described as a “summer pop record… that captures a few different types of sun-drenched pop.” He also claims that all of the songs “were inspired by dreams, memories, and places.”
I agree. Both his songs and his Tumblr are pretty dreamy. Download Marsh off his Bandcamp.

The Aussie’s are just killin it this month, first ceo’s new jam, then Tortoiseshell, now check out this new track “OOOO” from the Sydney based group FISHING. I’m keeping this one on repeat to channel some of that island feel my way!

The Very Best came out with their album Warm Heart of Africa in 2009. I first got wind of them last summer via their track “Yalira” but after a recent re-listen, I think that “Julia” might the perfect upbeat late night summer jam.

Neon Indian’s “6669” trippy stop motion video. Featuring some type of gourd and weird spider. I kinda like it.

A chill little ditty from the Aussie group Tortoiseshell

“Tortoiseshell! A musical squad of dudes, cousins, and brothers. Making music for the sand pit, island sojourn, disco or pastel bedroom. Their conga cuts, energy and high spirits map a vast vista of pop taking in many mediums and times.”

The Klaxons have always got something interesting up their sleeve.

Banksy’s “Exit through the Gift Shop” started screening in April and is finally making its way across the US throughout the rest of the summer. Get amped on that.

While we were out...

Hope everyone had a savage Fourth.

Stumbled across this gem not too long ago from Charlottesville, VA’s Evenings. “Friend” sounds like it could be played nicely in rotation with the likes of other southern groovers like Toro y Moi and Washed Out.

Friend by Evenings
Download this and the rest of the songs on their EP, North Dorm, here.

The newest track from Cults is here, “Oh My God” is available for free as part of Adult Swim’s 8 Singles in 8 weeks feature. Cults are one of my favorite groups of 2010, they’ve got this catchy-popness that makes you feel good inside.  The video for “Oh My God” (below) features their front-woman, Madeline, in a crazy, tripped out balloon costume that looks like something you’d see in a coral reef.

ceo has also got something new for ya. “Everything Is Gonna Be Alright” (available for download here). It’s got a nice, savage jungle sound to it.

D-Rod’s Savage Summer Wish List…

So, I’ve been working my ass off trying to make rent and rage on PBRs at the same time which has gotten pretty taxing. I know it is the cool thing these days to be “poor” and dress like a homeless person. I guess that’s what’s “in” right now, but this is a lifestyle I’ve been living for quite some time. So I wanted to drop a little D-Rod summer wish list/survival guide of things that will make your summer even more savage than it already is.

-You’ve gotta have your gear ready for the beach. I stick to board shorts when I’m on the beach or at the pool, and the kind that look like jorts are where it’s at.
Volcom has a pair called the “fixie mod”, go figure:

This pair by INSIGHT are even better, these things are the tits:

-In the spirit of summer, you’ve got to have some nice kicks. I myself have never been a huge sneaker head, but if I had the dollars I would grab a pair of these Miami Vice Reebok Pumps. I think Miami is pretty white trash, but these shoes are insane.
-As for shirts, it doesn’t really matter because it is going to be off by the end of the night anyways. The less fabric the better for those days of sweating and swilling PBRs for hours on the beach. That is why I am only wearing tank tops this summer, vintage if I’m lucky enough to find them. Urban Outfitters usually has some pretty good deals on tanks. These were pretty big in Australia when I was there a few years back, and if you’ve ever met an Aussie you know those fuckers are crazy, so I’m down.
-Of course you must have your headphones at all times. These are my dream headphones, Beats by Dr. Dre, you see every athlete in the world rockin these things. So somebody out there please buy me these!

-And finally, I might be broke, but I will ALWAYS have the newest iPhone. So if you don’t already know, get in line for the new one at any Apple Location!

HAPPY SUMMER EVERYONE!
juan more day till the weekend.

Not quite savage.  Simple, yet enticing.

Get Euro with Keep Shelly in Athens

Normally I am not a fan of anything that could be described as any sort of “lounge music” unless of course, I am poolside in Miami nursing away last night’s carnage. But Athens, Greece’s Keep Shelly in Athens, made up of “RΠЯ and The Mystery Girl”, keeps things savagely smooth.

Fokionos Negri Street—Keep Shelly in Athens by inula99

Not to mention they kinda remind me of some other Euro favorites like Sweden’s Lo-Fi-Fnk and Spain’s delorean. Who’s ready for an Ibiza vacay?

Bonnaroo Highlights

We came, we saw, here’s some of our favorite shows we conquered:

Deadmau5
With a show that wasn’t even scheduled to start until 2:15 am (and ended up lasting till sunrise) this was bound to be epic. Our bionic mouse friend came on about 20 minutes late, but the wait was WELL worth it as you can see by this insane stage setup. The video quality is a bit shaky, but you can see the glowing bionic mouse mask that was blowing minds left and right when it started talking.

There are some more videos of the show and the sick stage setup here.

Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros
It was hard to get too excited for any daytime shows because the heat literally sucks the soul out of you, but Ed Sharpe and the 0’s had no problem getting the crowd hyped up. Alex (lead vocals) was crowd surfing throughout the show, Jade (vocals, guitar) was goofy-eyed and grinning the whole time and the rest of the band kept things going. It was everything you’d expect from this band of happy hippies.

The Dead Weather
They played at one of the larger stages of Bonnaroo, but that didn’t take away from the intimacy of this show. The entire band was dripping sweat halfway through their set. Mosshart and White were seductive on stage. Dead Weather knows exactly what they’re doing.

Jay –Z
After hearing horror stories of Kanye making people wait 2 hours for him last year, we were reluctant to put ourselves through the clusterfuck that Jay-Z would be, but the second he hit the stage (on time) fighting the crowds was worth every bit of it. The stage set up was sweet and Hova sounded great. This was definitely one of the best performances of the weekend.

Check out the video of his encore performance here  to try and get a scope of just how many people were there, Hov turned down all the lights, making the crowd a sea of glow sticks and then lit off fireworks to end it all, PIMP.

Black Keys
The Keys were clear as a whistle for their whole late night set and things got even better when they started playing new stuff. These guys sounded so polished live it was like they were playing on my I-pod.

Bassnectar
Bassnectar wasn’t the first on our list, but one look at their tent and we had to check out the scene. We’re glad we did too because it was one of the best late night shows at the ‘Roo. The crowd here was contagious and completely absurd. Not only that, but the Bassnectar stage was located directly beside the Lunar Stage where an equally savage crowd was gathering for DJ Crystal Method which conveniently started right around the same time Bassnectar ended (2 am). Needless to say, the sun was high in the sky by the time we made it home from that one.

The only downside to Bonnaroo (besides baking in the sun and heat for 4 days straight) is that you can’t see every show. So here are some epic shows we missed but wished we could’ve seen
Miike Snow, The Flaming Lips, Hercules and the Love Affair, Thievery Corporation and Phoenix
Ohhh well, there’s always next year!

Still love this song, now there’s a video of people doing dirty things in a creepy warehouse to go with it.

Caught Millionyoung last night in DC, they are like a more upbeat, tranced out version of Washed Out meets Toro y Moi. Great stuff.

Urban Outfitters offered SUNGLASSES track, Whiplash, as part of their Music Monday post yesterday. If you don’t have this track yet, do yourself a favor and slap it on the I-pod right neow.
Their EP comes out this Friday.

Urb offers some good music on both their Music Monday posts and in their LSTN playlists for those of you craving some new tracks on the pod.
